　　　 Whither digital libraries? The case of a “billion-dollar” business

概要： For the last ten years, digital libraries (DL) research has followed a path of technology innovation that is likely to bring significant benefits to the knowledge society in the coming decade. To achieve this next step, sustained investment in R&D is essential. This talk discusses a model where DL would become a successful business by developing information products and services that make public e-contents more accessible and useful. The premise is that, like other information technologies, DL's success as a business is both necessary and desirable for it to be a viable field of study. Some of the research and policy issues related to this model will be discussed. An e-government example will be presented in the context of making government a business partner as well as an investor in research.

講演者紹介：Yi-Tzuu Chien博士はコネチカット大学教授を経て1982年から2001年まで米国科学財団（National Science Foundation）でProgram Director, Division Directorを勤められました。Directorを勤められたInformation and Intelligent System Divisionでは，NASAやDARPAとの共同助成で1994年から始まったDigital Library Initiativeをリードされました。また，1998年から1999年にかけてハーバード大学ケネディスクールで客員研究員を勤められました。Digital LibraryやBioinformaticsなど新しい情報技術分野に広い知識を持ち，これからの技術動向などに広い知見をお持ちです。
