概要

The recent world food crisis, especially rice supply shortages in some countries highlights the importance for the developing economies to extensively explore and step into the realm of sustainable agriculture. Indicators for sustainability have been developed by experts in the field to guide farmers and other farm operators. Previous research has linked farm decision-making to agricultural productivity and also decision-makers' reliance on data and information. The extension services have played a predominant role as intermediaries between agricultural scientists and farmers, particularly in disseminating information. A number of studies have looked into the information needs of farmers, however, insights from the eyes of the intermediaries themselves are still very scarce. In the information and digital age, it would be beneficial to find out the extent to which those trends have changed and the possible challenges facing the extension services.
