Along with expectations for more accessible digital contents, cultural heritage institutions in NZ have recently been under pressure to shift their modus operandi - from the current one that is perceived to be elitist and unapproachable, to one that is more transparent and more open to user and stakeholder engagement and participation.
In this talk, I will present some background information about cultural heritage in NZ, issues concerning digitization of cultural heritage, and the prospect for a meaningful and sustainable base for digital cultural heritage (DCH) in NZ. I will share some early observations from two research projects I am working on. One project explores an ecological approach to building an evolving and sustainable DCH; the other project on establishing participatory culture in DCH.
