His primary research interest is formal information retrieval models. Fernando's research experience includes distributed information retrieval approaches to web search, interactive and faceted retrieval, mining of temporal patterns from news and query logs, cross-lingual information retrieval, graph-based retrieval methods, and synthesizing information from multiple corpora. Fernando received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2008. His work on federation won the best paper awards at the SIGIR 2010 and WSDM 2010 conferences. He has coauthored over 270 scholarly publications and supervised 17 dissertations. He holds B.Eng and PhD degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Bristol, U.K. Previously he worked at the University of Cambridge and the University of Exeter. In 1997, he was a Toshiba Fellow at Toshiba Corporation Research and Development Centre Japan, and has held visiting positions at Carnegie Mellon University and at the National Institute of Informatics, Japan. His research interests are in diverse areas of information retrieval including spoken, image, video, multilingual. mobile, context-aware and personal search. His work has been supported by UK EPSRC, Science Foundation Ireland and the European Commission. He has published in excess of 300 papers describ.ing this work including receiving several Best Paper Awards. He regularly reviews submission to leading international journals and serves on the programme committees of international conferences and specialist workshops in information retrieval, applied natural language processing, multimedia and human-computer interaction. His research centers around the development of novel probabilistic information retrieval (IR) models and data-driven learning approaches for web, enterprise and social media search. He leads a team of researchers investigating new models and applications in the general field of large-scale text retrieval. Dr Ounis is the principal investigator of the open source Terrier search engine, widely used both in academia and industry for large-scale text mining and search applications. He led many international IR projects and initiatives (e.g. the TREC Blog and Microblog track initiatives), chaired a number of major information retrieval-related events (e.g. CIKM 2011), and is on all program committees of major IR conferences and related events.
